Abney Levels
Measuring slopes and angles is a fundamental task in construction as well as surveying. Since driveways, ramps, and corners of walls, among others, need to be tilted at specific angles, getting the correct slope measurements and angles goes a long way in building structures. One of the best tools to use for this task is an Abney level. This surveying instrument consists of a sighting tube, a protractor, and a spirit level that can be viewed on an internal mirror while sighting the target. To use an Abney level, hold it at eye level or mount it on a staff. Then, set it to the preferred angle, look through the tube, and point it toward the target. Lastly, adjust the level until the cross-hair is in line with the bubble. The result of the slope measurement can then be read on the protractor scale.
